The film became the third highest grossing Bollywood movie of 2015 and second highest grossing Hindi movie of all time.[3][4] The story begins at Badlapur railway station where a prisoner, Saajan Fernandes (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is being released from prison after serving twenty years' imprisonment term. After his release, he finds that his wife and son have left him. He has no place to go and decides to stop at Badlapur, where he intends to stay at a hotel. While returning from the railway station, he sees a girl neighbor of himself, Shruti Kakkar (Divya Dutta) on the train who is being harassed by three men in the absence of her husband Avinash "Avi" Kakkar (Sharad Kelkar). Avi has gone for an important business meeting- which turns out to be a ruse for Avi's boss Kancha Cheena (Pradeep Rawat) to get rid of him to take over his wife Shruti. Shruti and Saajan take refuge in the hotel room and Saajan leaves for a meeting with his friend. After a few days, Saajan sees Shruti and her mother, who comes from his village to look for Shruti. The mother tries to get her daughter married but then Shruti refuses. Avinash comes to meet Shruti and leaves with her after accepting a job offer from Kancha Cheena. Saajan also sees Avi at the station but does not recognise him as he has changed a lot during his jail sentence because of his association with Kancha Cheena which was the reason for him being sent to prison. The trailer was released on 8 January 2015, coinciding with Aamir Khan's birthday.
