It was released on May 24, 2005 in Europe, April 26, 2006 in North America, April 27, 2006 in Japan and October 29, 2007 in Australia. The object of the game is to defeat Napoleon and the French army during the Wars of the French Revolution. This can be achieved either by outsmarting Napoleon with military tactics or defeating him head-on on open battlefields. The player assumes command over one of three European nations: Great Britain (playing as England), Prussia (playing as France) or Austria (playing as Germany). The player also has the option of playing as one of three exiled French generals: Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis-Joseph San-Bonaparte, or Lucien Bonaparte. The game explores the four main battlefields of the Napoleonic Era: Europe, India, North America and Egypt. The two main singleplayer campaigns are based on two major events in Napoleonic History: the Revolutionary Wars in Europe and the Indian Campaigns. Napoleon Total War is a strategy game offering three distinct gameplay experiences with different objectives. The first of them is the turn-based "Grand Campaign", where the player can manage a nation, fight battles and expand their empire. The second is a real-time "Battle" mode, featuring three different approaches to combat. The third plays as an RTS, allowing full control of armies in a large scale conflict. The campaign history is driven by the player's actions as they create their own personal history as a nation’s leader during the Napoleonic Wars. Historical events and figures play out at key points in the game and through this, important decisions must be made which will affect both victory and defeat. Numerous "give-aways" are available for players to increase the longevity of the game, including assorted downloadable content (DLC), free maps, music tracks and other features. It also includes multiplayer support via LAN or satellite connections. The Multiplayer campaign allows players to control three different nations during the Napoleonic War. Unlike other versions, it does not provide a single player option, but does give hints for saving troops and options to use large armies nearby. The gameplay itself was regarded as being "simply brilliant", with the tactical battles being very much in depth.
